About us

big picture

The Holy Spirit Seminary is a community and an educational institution that was founded by the Roman Catholic Church in Papua New Guinea in Kap on 1 March 1963. In January 1968 the seminary was transferred to Bomana, 12 kilometres from the capital of the country, Port Moresby.

The purpose of the Holy Spirit Seminary is the education, formation, and preparation of young men from all dioceses of Papua New Guinea for the Roman Catholic Priesthood. According to the teachings of the Catholic Church, there are four aspects of the formation: human, spiritual, pastoral and intellectual. The intellectual education is divided into two aspects: philosophy and religious study, and theological study.

The seminarians are under the authority of the rector (nominated by the Congregation of the Evangelization of Peoples) and formators, his collaborators. The seminary is supervised by a Governing Council: the chairperson – Abp. Sir John Card. Ribat MSC, Bp. Don Lippert OFM Cap., Bp. Rolando Santos CM, Fr. Peter Chanel Silong, Fr. Joseph Vnuk OP, Fr. Jacek Tendej CM.

The seminary is an institution and a community whose purpose is to help in the formation and self-formation of the young men who experience and discover the call of God to follow Jesus as his apostles in today’s world. This practice is occurring in four dimensions – human, spiritual, pastoral and intellectual – during the different events of the daily, weekly,
and monthly schedule as:

Holy Eucharist with homily ★ Prayer of the Liturgy of the Hours morning, evening, and night prayer ★ Sunday Benediction with reflection by seminarians of the last year ★ Meditation ★ Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament ★ Other forms of devotion: Rosary, Station of Cross, Eucharistic procession in the Solemnity of Corpus Christi etc. ★ Private prayer ★ Annual retreat and monthly recollection days ★ Weekly formation conferences lead by the rector, vice-rector, spiritual director, or pastoral director ★ Religious, philosophical and theological study at the Catholic Theological Institute ★ Monthly meetings with the specialists of different disciplines ★ Monthly seminary community meetings ★ Spiritual direction ★ Individual talks ★ Pastoral activity ★ Bible group sharing ★ Preparation of the liturgy ★ Private study ★ Sports and physical work ★ Recreation, visiting of interesting places and institutions, watching TV.

All these activities have one goal – to prepare good, responsible, committed priests, followers of Jesus Christ (alter Christus) for the Church, especially for the Church in Papua New Guinea.

Fr. Jacek Tendej CM
Rector of the Holy Spirit Seminary
